Maxine Craig headshotThis Colloquium is on the ways in which skin color, attire, body shape, and image have influenced the African American freedom struggle.

 

The day will include:

    • A Keynote lecture by Maxine Craig, Professor and Director, Women and Gender Studies, University of California, Davis. Author of Ain't I a Beauty Queen? Black Women, Beauty, and the Politics of Race (Oxford University Press 2002)
    • A special screening of the documentary Dark Girls
    • A panel titled "From Sarah Baartman to Beyonce: The Black Body in the White Mind"
    • A catered lunch

12:00-12:30 Q&A with Professor Craig

12:30-2:45 Lunch and Dark Girls screening (film is 70 minutes) followed by Panel Discussion on Colorism

3:00-5:00 From Sarah Bartman to Beyonce: The Black Body in the White Mind  (Panel discussion on a variety of subjects)
