Ph.D. Student – History and African American and Diaspora Studies

Biography:

Tyler is a second-year graduate student of nineteenth-century U.S. History in the Dual Title History and African American Studies Program, focusing on African American playwrights, actors, and theater companies in the amateur theaters of the rural United States. He is interested in exploring how African American theater was used in the late-nineteenth century to memorialize the Civil War and Reconstruction. His research interests are driven by his continued work as a professional actor and lighting designer, as he strives to uncover the roots of modern theatrical memorialization in the plays of the nineteenth century.
