Matthew Rice was awarded with an Alumni Honoree Award posthumously and was accepted by his wife Annika and their daughter Nola.
Rice, also known by his creative moniker Mateo Blu, was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. His humble beginnings mirrored those of many inner-city youth, growing up surrounded by constant temptation, negativity, and chaos. From an early age, Mateo found refuge in two powerful outlets: art and football. Both became vehicles of escape and self-discovery, instilling in him the focus and discipline that would shape his future. Through this dedication, Matthew went on to excel in both arenas. Although his love for art began in childhood—sneaking paper from his teacher to sketch—he didn’t fully embrace his artistic identity until college, where he earned dual degrees in History and Integrative Arts. On the football field, he thrived, winning championships at both the high school and collegiate levels, including at Penn State, which ultimately led him to the highest level of competition in the NFL. In 2007, just one year into his professional football career, Mateo was diagnosed with brain cancer. What followed was a courageous 16-year battle marked by resilience, purpose, and unwavering strength. Throughout this journey, he documented his experience and became an advocate for others facing similar struggles. Mateo was blessed to fully realize his purpose through his art. Over the course of his career, he built an impressive and diverse clientele that included businesses, collectors, interior designers, professional athletes, international dignitaries, nonprofits, and admirers of the creative process. Entering his 15th year as an artist, he had become an internationally recognized figure whose abstract work brought innovative depth and storytelling—inviting viewers to form their own unique interpretations. In 2018, Mateo married his wife, Annika, a steadfast partner who stood beside him through life’s challenges and triumphs. In October 2020, he embraced one of the most meaningful roles of his life when he became a father to his daughter, Nola Blu, a source of profound love and inspiration. Matthew Rice passed away on March 17, 2023. His legacy lives on through his art, his advocacy, and the countless lives he inspired.
